Where It All Begins

5 July 2009   Flower Mound, TX: Josh Hamilton, Hank Aaron, Ken Griffey Jr, Babe Ruth, Nolan Ryan, Ivan ‘Pudge’ Rodriguez, Cy Young, A-Rod and Mickey Mantle all started here. Little League baseball. I don’t care how many home runs you crushed , how many batters you’ve struck out or how many Gold Glove awards you’ve won in the Major Leagues you’ve been through here screaming “Hey Batter, Batter, Batter” or “I’ve seen better swings on a porch” or “My Grandmother throws harder than you”. Spitting out Sunflower Seeds and blowing bubbles with a mouth full of Double Bubble and crying all the way back to the dugout when you’ve struck out or kicking your glove after losing a game.

I played baseball for 20 years and every time I shoot a game I miss being on the field. I can’t help but remember when we would play ‘Cup Ball’ before our game and how we couldn’t wait for our free (we thought it was at least) cokes and nachos after the game.

I’ve been fortunate enough to shoot some big names in the game but between coaching my Daughter’s softball team and being on the ball field covering this annual tournament it really takes me back to my days playing in the dirt and screaming “Happy Birthday” or “Hey Look what I found” when a player from the other team caught the ball. It’s almost soul cleansing.

Anyway here are a few shots from the first day of this tournament. I hope you enjoy the pics a fraction of how much I enjoyed being there.

It's funny how all your teammates and coaches will yell at you "It'll only hurt for a minute" when a fastball just misses you by an inch. Funny, unless you're the batter.

One of my favorite things has always been having the skills to backup your attitude. This kid definitely had the skills.

"I GOT IT, I GOT IT, I GOT IT!" He did end up making this catch.

"Hey did you see that girl in the first row? Throw a wild pitch so I can go back there and look at her"

It rained quite a bit during this game and on this play the runner slid into home and this is where he stopped, about a foot in front of home plate! The mud kept him from sliding and he was stopped immediately by the mud. All his teammates were laughing, and so was I. Been there, done that.

I love the comment you made between the pitcher and the catcher. Me and the kids had a good laugh at that! Good job.
